Introduction to linear bushing operation: bushings and bearings


Dynamic bearing systems are hole/ shaft interfaces designed to allow relative rotation between components at the most basic level. As a general rule, one of the parts is completely fixed and the other is rotating. The design of the bearing system can be very simple and complex with many moving parts and components used to transmit movement through the system. A brief description of the two most basic types of bearing systems and their limitations will be an excellent introduction to a wide range of bearings and rotational movements.

Journal Bearing (Bushing/Shaft):-

The simplest type of bearing uses many different names, such as plain bearings, plain bearings or bushing bearings. Bearing systems of this type are typically designed free space settings consisting of bushings and shafts. This simple hole / shaft interface is designed to facilitate the rotation movement of the stump inside the bearing hole using an external lubricant compound, which is generally designed to fill the space between the shaft and the hole. There are no intermediate rolling or sliding elements that allow movement in this way. Journal bearings are typically made using advanced material technologies, such as oil impregnated bushings, to make joints with low friction / slip resistance in this regard.


These bearings have a very simple configuration, but they are almost always used with a complete and reliable active lubrication system. There are "dry" cam bearings (without lubrication) that can be specified for low load and low load applications. This type of bearing system generally uses a polymer bushing that can be specified, but most industrial applications that use bearing bearings are fully lubricated shaft / bushing systems. The successful operation of said bearing system is due to the presence of saturation lubrication every time it rotates, so if necessary, it is necessary to place said system in a reasonably accessible area of ​​the machine for preventive maintenance or repair. Shaft in the bush. The failure of the lubrication system generally results in a rapid and fatal failure of the entire machine.


If it is not possible to use an active lubrication system for certain applications that need to maintain high speed, as well as variable dynamic loads, it is better to consider the design of the contact bearing system.

Ball Bearings:-

The bearings are usually mechanical components that have rolling or sliding components that further reduce friction between the movable shaft and the fixed hole or reference point. The most common and easily identifiable type of bearing is probably ball or roller bearings. Bearings of this type generally consist of an internal raceway, which is mounted directly (pressed) on the internal shaft. Then, the rolling elements (balls or tapered rollers) roll along the opposite side of the inner race, all of which are contained within a device by the outer race. It is not difficult to visualize how this system allows relative movement between the inner and outer raceways through the relative rolling of the rolling elements. The rolling elements of the bearing cartridge can be completely lubricated and sealed between the inner and outer raceways of the bearings so that they are not exposed to environmental contaminants.




The rolling elements of ball bearings can be made of hardened tool steel alloys and can also be specified with additional coatings such as chrome to further increase the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of ball bearings. Stainless steel ball bearing systems can be easily obtained if corrosion or disassembly is a concern in certain applications. When guide bearings are almost useless, while significant thrust loads must be maintained, cylindrical or needle bearing systems are the ideal bearing for the job and can be easily specified to meet a wide range of applications.

For low-cost applications with easy access to bearings for lubrication and maintenance, the bearings can be a perfectly suitable design and can be used for many types of applications. However, if the bearings cannot be accessed, or if the bearing system must withstand heavy radial loads or thrust loads, the design engineer must continue to explore a wide range of rolling contact bearings. In any case, it is very likely that there are appropriate bearings waiting to be unearthed for each and every one of the variants of mechanical bearings.
